Cardiff to Tredegar House Circular Ride

This weeks bike ride we had decided to try to find a route to Tredegar House. We have been regularly running here on Saturdays as part of the weekly parkrun so thought it was about time we visited on our bikes.

We thought there was a route via old St Mellons/Cefn Mably after studying the OS Map and discussing with uncle Richard who apparently used to be a milk man in the area many many moons ago!

We again made our usual route from Pontprennau via St Mellons Road and onto Bridge Road. At the end of Bridge Road we take a left and 50 yards on we take the right hand fork onto Druidstone Road. We stay on this road for a mile or so and take a right onto Coal Pit Lane. This takes us onto the A48 just before the Coach and Horses Pub.

We take care crossing the road and head towards Marshfield via the aptly named Marshfield Road. We follow this Road for about a mile and a half until we come to a T junction. In front and to your right slightly is Peterstone Golf Club. At this junction we turn left onto the B4250 (St Brides Road).

We stay on this road for a few miles until we reach Dyffryn. Eventually we come to a roundabout and take a left onto Dyffryn Drive. We follow this road to the T juncion and take a left into Tredegar House.

Tredegar House is a lovely park with a lake and woodland area. Lots of grassy areas for a picnic. You can have tours around the house and there is a decent cafe there. We found a bench in the grounds and tucked into some much needed nosh, soaking up the rays. It is a little known secret that Adventure Thursdays are always sunny but don't tell anyone!

We put the worlds to rights and discuss best options for routes home. Initially we think about going back the same we we came but then decide to head out of the main entrance taking a right onto Pencarn way. We are concerned about cycling on the A48 as can be a very busy road but think we ought to check it out to see what cycle paths there are.

We are pleased to discover that there is a little used pavement from here right the way up this road to St Mellons so the cyclying is good and safe.

We continue on the A48 for 2 miles or so until we spot Pound Hill to our right. Uncle Richard has mentioned this hill to us and says it will be a good training exercise. So we carefully cross the road and head up a very steep Pound Hill, he wasn't joking! We see a turning to our left thinking this looks like a good route however we have to back track as it turns out to be a farm and dead end. Up and Up Pound hill we continue. At the top there is a viewing point - a hut on stilts. Well worth a climb up to see magnificent views of the coastline.

At the Top of Pound Hill we take a left onto Penylan Road, now a familar route. A great stretch of road with some magnificant views. We stay on this road until we come to the T junction and take a left back onto Druistone Road and head on home.
