The Richard Burton 10k road race

Originally I had my eye set on another run for this weekend (Bog and Bryn challenge) but having read the description and talking to other club runners I was advised against it so soon after Snowdonia. So with this run also being a club championship thought it would be fun to catch up with a few fellow members and check out a run that had been in my peripheral for a while.

In theory the Richard Burton road race has been running for over 30 years, however, recently ownership of the run has changed and the course slightly altered. The path runs around the Afan valley, with some sharp turns and short hills but overall a lovely course, and with use of the downhill's, pb potential.

Originally treating this as a “cool down” run (and suffering the effects slightly of the night before) I soon found I was in my stride and feeling quiet comfortable. This year’s race was busy, with over a 1000 signing up (986 eventually taking apart) previous years have seen around 500 and 600 in numbers. I have to say it was slightly congested at the start, if it wasn’t for the light hearted fun atmosphere of the run I might of found it more frustrating. Once out of the twisty turnabout start and the housing estate you were out on closed roads and cycle paths. Taking in some of the sights of the valley such as the Pontrhydyren aqueduct and viaduct. I found again, the last 1-2k slightly congested as we make our way through the back paths alongside the River Afan towards the Cwmafan rugby club and the finish line. Not a pb but considering Snowdonia marathon in my legs I was pleased with my efforts.

Oh and a Brucie bonus…..another slate coaster. 3rd this year and 4th in total. Now on to the mug collection.
