Last minute half at Coed Y Brenin
Myself and good mate Nic make a last minute decision to run the Trail Marathon Wales half in June. Nic being an old hat at the course inspired me to run it with her for the 3rd time and I have to say that it didn’t let me down. I loved it! I’ll forgive them for the scorchio weather- blazing sun, highs of 27 and zero breeze- it couldn't be helped but the route was fantastic.
It’s difficult to describe the event but hear goes….even though there is a high calibre of sponsors, held by Salomon with support from Suunito, buff, torq, 9bar, Brecon Water etc , there is also a high calibre of runners from around the globe, 18 countries in total, it is still quintessentially a no frills trail race. The route takes you off road, along forestry tracks and trails, up hills and down hills, using small sections of technical bike paths in the world famous Coed Y Brenin park, North Wales. There are basic but well stocked water and feed stations, friendly marshals and great support from walkers and bikers enroute. The shaded forestry paths gave a welcome break from the sun, the stunning views when reaching the top. With 3 decent climbs it gives the half a total ascent of 2188ft with the downhill sections super fun:)
Essentially it was a training run for us, with Snowdonia Trail Marathon in July we were after the miles and an ascent – not so much time, which giving the weather it was just as well. We cross the line 2hr20 is a hot sweaty mess (and not in a good way ;)) We have buddies out running the marathon and given the heat I have to say I don’t envy them. We treat ourselves to ice cream as we cheer our mates in, topping up our tans in the process. They run a winter series and I am tempted to return in February next year. Goodies include a cotton tshirt (It’s a quality t and a nice change to the tech shirts) Wooden coaster (Very appropriate) and 2 pairs of Salomon socks (my new favs!) as well as your usual gels, snacks and water. Superbly organised, fantastic route with friendly fun atmosphere, one to do again! We’re talking about signing up for some of the other races that they do- Winter Trail is on the horizons...
