8th December, Llandrindod Wells
Newport athletes packed the East Wales junior squads and struck gold as they traversed the twisting and muddy Llandrindod Wells course, plus silver in the Senior Men’s race.
Our first gold came in the Primary Girls curtain raiser courtesy of Anya Brady, with Poppy Evans 13th. In the Primary Boys race Newport Harriers struck team bronze through Tom Garrod, Isaac Barry and James Owen.
On to the main championship races and East Wales U13 Boys took team gold. Leo Stark was East’s second finisher in 4th place, followed by Harry Dawes and Morgan Sage. Amy Garrod 12th was East’s top placer in U13 Girls, followed by Ceri Griffiths (weak from a recent cold) and Aratz Urkola.
Newport provided East’s top finishers in U15 Girls and U15 Boys. Lily Hart was 10th, leading a Newport charge of Elin Griffiths, Lily Williams, Alyssa Baker, Antonia Dawes, Emily Wilcox and, taking a break from race walking, Poppy Stowell-Evans. In the boys race Elur Urkola was an impressive 7th in what was his UK competitive debut, followed by Josh Jones, Oliver Humphreys, Isaac Jones and hurdler Dan Meehan.
Ellie Robinson 11th spear-headed the East team in the U17 Women race followed by owri Thomas, Caitlin Jones and Seren Jones. In the U 17 Men’s race Spencer Smith was 7th, followed by Michael Owen and Oscar Denton.
Remi Adebiyi was Newport’s only competitor in U20 men and led the East Wales team in 7th place.
Congratulations to Abed Teweldebrhan, who was our sole selection in the Senior Men’s race and took individual silver. We had no Senior Women selections though Tracy Baker (Alyssa’s mother) came 108th.
Colin Bradley had the longest shift of all, officiating on the finish line throughout the day. Alex Dawes provided the East Wales tent which doubles up as a kite in windy conditions.
