Newport Stadium will be open from Tuesday 1st September.
The track has been re-laid and re-painted and looks in great condition.
The hammer cage no longer conformed to UKA safety standards and has been removed. Two new cages should have been delivered in the past few days and will be installed, one inside the stadium, the other on the opposite side of the car park to the stadium. When this is erected almost all discus and hammer training will take place from this cage. It is possible some shot put training will be done from this location too.
Newport Harriers have agreed to pay £8,000 towards this re-development and the rest of the money is being made available from Welsh Athletics and lottery funding via Sport Wales. Newport Live have contributed by arranging to clear the ground of some trees to make the outside training area available. The chair of the club, Peter Hitchings has been working continually on delivery of this project with some input from the other officers of the club. This has only been possible to achieve through a 4 way partnership and covid 19 presented some challenges in getting the project to its current position.
The project would not have started had the club not been able to make a financial contribution.
On return to the track there will be a number of changes to the way we manage sessions. This is because we had to satisfy both Welsh Athletics and Newport Live that we can return to activity with the minimum of risk of creating a fresh spike in the infection rates of covid 19. The items listed below can only change as the Welsh Government relaxes its rules and with the permission of Newport Live and agreement of Welsh Athletics. These conditions may not precisely mirror what you find at other venues.
Newport Harriers also had a grant of £10,000 from the local business development grant to assist in re-starting the club as we come out of lockdown. Some of this money will be used to book additional training sessions at the stadium and to re-generate membership when circumstances allow. From September 1st we want to see as many athletes as possible returning , but we will delay the start up of primary school aged children until September 14th in order to ensure we are able to do things in a controlled manner.
The following has been sent out today to committee members today and will also be sent out to coaches.
We have arranged access for 1 hour slots 6:30pm to 7:30pm and 7:30pm to 8:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday throughout September. If there is demand weekend sessions will be considered.
Athletes cannot book 2 sessions on the same evening.
The maximum group size is 30 including coaches. Coach/Athlete ratios must be maintained at 1:8 for primary school children and 1:12 for all other age groups.
Under 11s will return on 14th September 5:30 to 6:30 will be exclusively for under 11s. Please email ken_goodger@yahoo.com if your child is in one of Ken's group or jeanlyn01@gmail.com if your child is in one of Jean's groups.
Newport Harriers had over 400 members registered in 2019/2020. With sessions restricted to 30 the 8 sessions booked would allow a maximum number of athletes we can accommodate at 180 per week. This means we cannot at present accommodate athletes who are not First Claim Members of the Club.
Members who were in arrears with their payments on 31st March 2020 will have to clear their debts before being allowed to train. Note members in arrears on 31st March 2020 will not be registered for competition until their debt has been cleared.
All sessions will have to be booked by email to Newport_harriers@yahoo.co.uk Coaches will be sent booking forms (a copy of the booking forms can also be found below).
The track, jumps areas and throws areas will be zoned. Zones will be allocated to training groups depending on demand. More than one zone may be allocated to a group.

Parents of children under 18 must remain on site throughout the session (NOTE entry to the stadium may be restricted - on site can be considered as within Newport International Sports Village).
If parents enter the stadium they must maintain a minimum 2 metre separation from others and from the training group throughout the session.
Parents must be contactable on the phone number they provide throughout the session.
All attendees must be registered on the booking form no later than 3:00pm on the day of the session.
